Playing Star Wars with Principia

Principia is a good system for games where the characters are embedded in a social order under stress. I've been playtesting Principia in it's default setting a lot. I was thinking about alternate settings for a game at Go Play NW, and Star Wars just kind of jumped out at me.

When you set out to run Principia, your first job is to find a pressure point on the current world order and push. Make sure the pressure point encompasses something the characters care about. Finally, pose a question that ties them together.

So I'm thinking about Star Wars Episode 2. The Jedi Order, the Senate, and the Republic are all under stress. Let's take the Jedi Order. That's our pressure point. We'll decide it's fate through play. We'll assume the characters care about the fate of the Jedi Order. This is Star Wars after all.

Now we need a question. This is the question we're going to answer at the end of play. "Does the Jedi Order deserve to survive?" is a good one. How about "Is the Jedi Order hypocritical?", or "Can balance be restored to the Force (without destroying the Jedi order)?"

So for characters we can have a group of Jedi, or a mixed group of heroes, or even Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Palpatine. That sounds pretty cool--a game where we can play some of the principal characters on both sides of Episode 2 and decide the ultimate fate of the Jedi order.

What's Going On?

Wow this place is quiet.

Maybe it's because God invented January to test us and the devil invented February to show he could test us better. A pox on those two months of dreariness and dark.

So here's what I've been up to in game and design lately:

I'm still refining and updating How to Host a Dungeon. It's gotten some nice praise from quarters I never would have expected. Plus Ben Lehman won't let it lie.

We're still working on Principia. Brandon came up with a heap of secrets for the game, and I've been working up a new playtest version with the new secrets and positions.

I helped run the Story Games Lounge at Conquest NW. Here's an after-action thread.

Also, we have a date for our convetion, Go Play NW. It's going to be May 31-June1. Go to the Wiki for more information.

Magicians of England Available as Download

I posted about Magicians of England in a Story Games thread about novels we'd like to see made into RPGs and got a few requests for more information. Rather than hold back, I just went ahead and posted the full rules of Magicians of England as a free download, as well as some play aids, etc.

Magicians of England is a story game of gentleman (and woman) magicians in Victorian England. It's my homage to Sussana Clarke's Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. The game is playable, and fun, but unfinished. It ended up being a sort of workshop for concepts that I incorporated into Princpia.

By the way, my frustrated rant to the contrary, Principia is still very much moving forward towards publication.

Principia is on Hold

I've been working on Principia for several months now. Because of the many things going on in the rest of my life, I just can't think about it any more. I'm taking a break from Principia and game design in general to focus on other things.

Principia Has a Web Site

The Principia Web Site is now live. There's a quick description of the game, some actual play links, and a bit more. I'll probably have playtest stuff there in the near future too.

Principia Milestones

Principia reached an important milestone in my creative process today (though it's one I wish I'd reached a month ago). The rules document is now concept complete. This means that everything I think needs to be in there is in there. A few sections are merely skeletal, but to my knowledge there's nothing missing.

There will still likely be changes, additions, and subtractions, but it's all downhill from here.

Also, it looks like Brandon Amancio is going to step in as co-author. I've been having a lot of trouble getting the secrets and setting stuff to come out right. Brandon is a genius at just this kind of stuff so he's the perfect person to bring on board.

It's not Called Mathematica Anymore

The good folks at Story Games have helped me come up with a more descriptive name for my game. The new name is Principia: Secret Wars of the Renaissance.

Principia is now rules complete, which means I won't be making any more mechanical changes except to fix problems that come up in play test. Now I'm fleshing out the content, adding secrets, factions, and adventure hooks. Everyone's gotten really excited about all the crazy over the top renaissance steam punk stuff that I haven't fully fleshed out yet. I guess I'd better get to work on that.
